acne Acne is an inflammation disease of the skin caused by changes in the skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated oil glands. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots, or zits. Acne develops because of impairments of the functioning of skin blocked follicles.

alpha hydroxy acid AHA’s and chemical peels “unglue” the outer layer of dead skin cells, allowing healthier cells to come to the surface. black head A blackhead is an open pimple with a dark center. Oily skin is generally the type of skin that is plagued with blackheads. The bacteria in blackheads can cause acne.
body brushing
body wrap A very effective treatment where the body is wrapped in cloth or plastic after a masque for hydration, detoxification, remineralization, slimming, and or stimulation. Warm blankets may be used to cause the product to penetrate.
cellulite All the muscles of the body are wrapped in a padding of fatty connective tissue. The fatty cells of the padding are held in place by a network of fibers, nourished and cleansed by body fluids. These fluids cleanse the fatty tissue, when this process is slowed down due to lack of exercise, water deprivation, weight gain and food additives, the tissue is flooded with waste materials that thicken into gelatin-like substance and hardens to form immovable pockets.
chemical peel There are various different types of chemical peels there aim is to resurface the skin through the application of a professional solution that causes the dead cells to pull away from the skin. If you open or remove a cuticle, bacteria can form straight to the blood stream.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Frees congestion of the muscle attachments. Deep work brings about realignment of postural distortions and restores proper range of motion. Liberation of emotional tensions may also result. Muscle function and awareness are balanced, and elasticity is revived.

deep tissue massage Aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and connective tissue.  Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots also known as “adhesions.”

exfoliate The process of removing a thin layer of dry skin cells with loofah or other lightly abrasive materials. Well-formulated skin resurfacing treatments and products can help skin cells turn over in a more natural, youthful manner by removing the build-up of old skin cells and replacing them with newer, smoother ones. Common antioxidants are Vitamin C, E, superoxide dismutase, and certain forms of Vitamin A. hyperpigmentation Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin. Causes of hyperpigmentation range from sun damage caused by UV exposure, hormone fluctuations due to pregnancy or menopause, and skin injuries such as acne scarring. Certain skin types can also be more susceptible to hyperpigmentation. It is important to consult with a skin care professional prior to using products to even skin discoloration as high percentages of strong ingredients can cause further irritation and lead to more discoloration.

mask / masques Masks clean pores and infuse moisture, vitamins, minerals and plant extracts by smothering the skin for 10-15 minutes. Rinse well when time is up then tone. Massage Therapist A massage therapist is a health care practitioner licensed from accredited massage therapy programs. They use specific manual techniques to stabilize soft tissues (such as muscle) that have been affected by stress, injury, and illness. These manual techniques are designed to improve circulation, enhance muscular relaxation, relieve pain, reduce stress, induce relaxation, enhance immune function, as well as promote health and well-being.
moisturize / moisturizers Just as the rest of you body requires hydration and nutrients, so does your skin. Your skin should be treated with a daytime moisturizer that provides a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. At night, using a more intense moisturizer helps to rebalance and normalize your skin as you sleep. Oily skin also need moisture or it will secrete more oil to justify lack of moisture. Moistures the body with lotion or cream moisturizer. Shea butter is excellent after a shower or bath. Moisturizers and lotions penetrate deeper when the skin is slight damp.
Natural Nail Technician A Nail Technician, is someone who takes care and provides cosmetic treatment of the hands and feet shaping and cleaning the fingernails and cuticles using tools, creams, oils, waxes and massage techniques. This service is normally ended with painting the nails using a base coat, nail laquer, and top coat.
paraffin A warm emmoliant wax used to seal moisturize and seal in moisture. Hands and feet are dipped into the wax which also helps arthritis, dry skin and poor circulation.
pedicure Grooming of the nails of the feet by removing dead skin build up, pushing the cuticles back (see cuticle), trimming, filing and buffing the nails, massaging of the feet and calfs ending with polishing of the nails
peruvian wax A peruvian wax is a bikini wax with all hair removed except a strip down the center. 1/4 inch of hair is needed for hair removal to be successful. Purchase No Scream Cream to minimize discomfort.
pumice peel Pumice Peel contains ultra-fine pumice crystals in a creme base peeling away dull, dreary cells, abrades uneven skin visibly reducing the appearance of pores, diminishing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and un-even skin tone. Nourishing plant extracts and essential oils soothe, smooth and comfort the complexion. This service is done professionally in the spa including a facial or purchase the peel for an at-home maintenance product.
reflexology Ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Indian therapy, which treats the whole body through the touching of reflexes and their manipulation; primarily done on the feet, but also done on hands and ears. The feet are believed to be microcosms of the entire body, having relational points which correlate to specific body parts, especially major organs and the circulatory system.
reiki An energy and or massage technique using subtle stationary hand positions on or over points of tension or injury; the therapists hands are usually fully extended, and palms applied in the affected area.
re-texturize To change the surface of the skin by creating smoother softer skin.
serum Serums are liquid formulasand are able to penetrate below the skin wall and attach themselves to emerging skin cells promoting healthy new skin cells.  Serums come in the form of droplets and are applied sparingly under your moisturizer. Usually botanical nutritives, vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals are used to deeply nourish and fortify the skin addressing dehydration, wrinkles, age spots, break-outs, rosecea, and aging skin issues. A must in any skin care regime.
slimming wrap An enzymatic slimming solution penetrates toxin cleansing herbs through the protein wall that surrounds fat cells so the herbs can move toxins from fat cells through intercellular osmosis, to the inner lymph system (see lymph function), creating inch loss. The client is mummy wrapped in plastic and warmed with a warming blanket. For best results treatments should be done in a series of at least seven to ten.
SPF protection A sunblock physically blocks the sun’s UV(ultra violet) radiation to the skin, both UVA and UVB. UVA rays are responsible for tanning, aging and skin damage, and UVB rays, causes burning. Both kinds of ultraviolet rays are equally dangerous. Sunblocks scatter, reflect, and physically block UV radiation.Choose a broad spectrum sunblock with a 20-30 SPF. Ultra violet rays are the leading cause of skin cancer.
sports massage A deep-tissue massage directed specifically at muscles used in athletic activities.
swedish massage Swedish massage, is the most common form of massage therapy. Massage therapists use long, smooth strokes, kneading and other movements using massage oil or lotion. Massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues and releasing waste.
tone / toners Using a toner re-hydrates, cools, balances, nourishes, refreshes your skin and removes harsh minerals left by tap water. Toners remove any remaining traces of dirt, makeup or oil your cleanser may have not removed. It’s good to use a toner that is alcohol-free, as alcohol dries your skin. Toning closes the pores of the skin and brings the pH back to where your skin is supposed to be creating a balance to the skin. Once cleansing of the skin has been completed, the pores tend to be open and therefore slightly enlarged. As a result, dirt and dust can get into the skin; moisture can leave the skin, which in return dehydrates the skin. waxing procedure The removal of unwanted hair by a professional applying warm wax (sometimes cold) to the area. A strip of soft material is applied on top of the wax attaching itself to the hair and with a quick motion the strip is removed in a specific manner causing the hair to be removed, root and all. white head Whiteheads are a mild form of acne. Like blackheads, whiteheads are hair follicles that have become plugged with matter consisting of sebum and dead skin cells. The reason that they are white, rather than black, is that the opening of the follicle is too narrow to allow air in, so oxidation of the matter does not take place. This should be corrected by a professional skin care clinician such as an Esthetician. Squeezing can cause infection and scaring.
